Description
The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco was constructed in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, a world fair dedicated to the celebration of the opening of the Panama Canal. My grandfather, Edward Soucek, was a civil engineer that worked on the canal, so the Panama-Pacific Exposition holds a special place in my heart. In fact, my grandmother and grandfather were both in Panama when my mother was born, and she spent the first years of her life there before moving back to the Midwest where my grandfather worked on dams.
This shot was captured on a trip to San Francisco to see our dear friends get married – friends that I helped introduce! It was a romantic journey into a fabulous city. My love and I wandered the city for hours on end, soaking up as much of the ambiance and life of the city as we could on our short stay. Typically a low-light shot like this one in late dusk would be captured using a tripod. As we had been on foot, trolley and bus for the entire day, I opted to leave the tripod at our hotel room to lighten the load. A two pound camera, with several extra pounds of gear, gets surprisingly heavy after some 10 or 12 hours of walking around! Priding myself on exceptionally steady hands, I was able to pull this shot off free-handed, after several blurred attempts, just before heading off to our next adventure destination.
