Description
After returning to my home town for a visit after being away at college, my friend’s parents described a trip they had taken to Venice, Italy. They painted the picture of a maze of tiny streets and canals, stone palaces and a myriad of turn-offs, staircases and cafes. I had never given Venice much thought until that day, sitting casually on the living room couch, yet the imagery stuck and I knew I wanted to go there some day. As luck would have it, I was fortunate enough to make the trip and be able to go on a Venice photography expedition. As luck would further have it, my life partner had already been to Venice and was as equally transfixed as I came to be. As a seamstress, among other things, my partner in crime had long ago cooked up the dream to attend Carnival not just as tourists, but as participants. She spent about nine months crafting a 16th century Venetian Carnival dress, along with two of her closest friends and their mates. Along with my brother and his wife as well, we made the journey!
It was a very strange feeling to be a center of attention and a tourist attraction in a city foreign to me. As custom would have it, most masked Carnival goers do not speak to further disguise their identities. It was almost a shame to reveal my identity as a photographer by carting around a camera in my matching 16th century attire I paid to have tailored for me… almost! The artist in me couldn’t leave my camera even for a few hours.
You can imagine the site of me taking this romantic shot in full regalia!
